State Conference Recap by State Secretary Maria Oviedo,
Awesome contests, great breakout sessions, the opportunity to meet new people and see old friends; were just some of the reasons why the TAFE 26th Annual State Conference was an inspiring event. More than 1,250 members attended the conference that took place at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center in San Marcos, TX.
Before the start of the conference, we had the Super Bowl Social where schools running for state office introduced themselves. The turnout was great and everyone had an awesome time watching the football game, enjoying delicious food and meeting new people.
The next day, the Opening General Session started by recognizing TFTA state officers who were leading the general sessions along with the TAFE state officers. We were honored to have them on stage with us and to recognize them for their hard work. They received an award medal and, for the first time, we had the opportunity to see two awesome student organizations, TAFE and TFTA, becoming one student organization.
Throughout the sessions, winners of every contest were announced: sponsor of the year, student of the year, and the lesson plan winner who won a $1,200 scholarship. Everyone did a wonderful job, especially the Bell sisters from George West High School whose beautiful song about changing the world inspired TAFE students and sponsors to donate $350 to the Haiti relief efforts conducted by the American Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders.
We cannot forget our two awesome keynote speakers: Anna Mackey and her keynote, “What an Appetite… to be a Teacher”; and Dr. Robert Garza and his keynote, “The Journey to Become a Digital Educator”. It was an honor to have them as keynote speakers and we admired the impact that they made on us as they inspired us to become teachers and make a difference in people’s lives and in our communities.
The schools running for state office did an awesome job on their skits, and we congratulate 2010-2011 TAFE state officers.
I’m glad that I had the opportunity to be part of this amazing organization; TAFE has allowed me to take one step closer to becoming a teacher and provided me the opportunity to meet energetic students who have the same interests as me. I had a great time at the annual conference with the other state officers, Michael Carroll, Sasha De Leon and Karina Garcia. Even though we were separated by long distances, we learned how to get along and accomplish something great that will be remembered for many years. I’m really excited about next year, I’m sure that our new leaders will make it just as fun and enjoyable as this year!
